I recently built a little atom based system for my firewall/router at home. I used an Intel Pro GT 1000 PCI card. To my dismay Smoothwall express 3.0 polar would not support this card. The two things I took away from other forums were: a) The gigabit NICs are perhaps too 'new' to be supported and An experienced Linux type person could likely install the driver from the intel site and carry on happily.I chose Smoothwall initially as it was billed as the perfect operating system for the non Linux user but gives the security advantage of a Linux based firewall. As I have never seen Linux in any environment I was hoping this was the wall for me. Eventually I loaded PFsense and it worked fine. However, it seems to be relatively high level networking gear and I am slow to learn how to tweak it. Hopefully it works fine out of the box. Any advice on getting smoothwall to work? Or should I stick with pfsense? Is pfsense full of holes without the proper setup tweaks? |
